Italian, mid 19th century. A monumental heavily carved giltwood poltroncina armchair in the Italian Rococo Revival style, the balloon back surmounted by a heavily carved crest with central carved shell and phoenix with scrolls, flowers, and fruit, the balloon back and seat upholstered in conforming silk brocade fabric with classical motifs and nailhead trim, the acanthus carved stiles terminating in padded arms of conforming upholstery and trim with eagle head arm supports, each holding from its beak a garland of fruits and flowers, over the serpentine seat rail decorated with central carved cabochon, leaves, and flowers, all raised on two front carved cabriole legs and raking cylindrical back legs terminating in bronze sabots. Approximate height 56.75", width 27.75", depth 24". seat to floor 15.5".
