An original typed speech given by Booker T. Washington at Hampton University at the memorial of General Samuel Chapman Armstrong, founder and first principal of the normal school now known as Hampton University, on May 25, 1983. The six page speech is typed on vellum and touches on Armstrong's contributions to Tuskegee University (nee Tuskegee Normal School) as well as his lifelong contributions to the abolition of slavery and support of black education. Pages approximately 11" x 8.5". Provenance: From the estate of Booker T. Washington. Note on provenance: Copy of letter from Booker T. Washington's granddaughter, Robin Washington Banks, confirming provenance is available upon request. Letter states her inheritance of the estate and its ultimate sale to the consignor of this lot.
