$300
American, circa 1880. Rare Eugene Berninghaus brand "Climax" model barber chair on an oak incised Eastlake frame with burl panels covered in floral needlepoint with swivel base and foot pedal. Two Metal tags on back reads "Climax" and "August Kern, St. Louis, MO and manufactured by Eugene Berninghaus-Cincinatti, OH." Height 44.5", width 28" (arm to arm), seat depth 18.5". Note: The introduction of the Climax chair caused a revolution in the style of barber chairs. They found favor with the profession and created a great demand, as no shop seemed to be complete without them. The chair was of great advantage to the barber, as by their revolving action the chair could be placed in such a position most suitable to the lights, either in an upright for hair cutting, for reclining for shaving; and in any of these positions it can be locked without any effort by the operator or strain to the chair.
