Canadian, 1950s. A painted aluminum 12 light chandelier designed by Paavo Tynell for Lightolier Canada, having central black enameled ring or circulet issuing twelve brass scrolling arms with coiled wire decoration terminating in twelve upturned enameled aluminum cylindrical shades with light-transmitting perforations. Marked to the central circulet "CANADA". Approximate height 31.5", diameter 33". Note: see following literature: Charlotte and Peter Fiell, eds., 1000 Lights, Vol. 1: 1879 to 1959, Cologne, 2005, p. 396 for a similar example. Paavo Tynell (1890–1973) was a Finnish designer. He was one of the founders of the Taito “art forging†firm, serving as its director and head designer until 1954. Tynell’s main work included lighting design for the Lasipalatsi building in Helsinki and the lighting for the office of the Secretary General of United Nations. From the 1930s until the 1950s, Tynell was one of Finland’s most widely used designers of light fittings for public spaces. Alvar Aalto, among other architects, collaborated with him in the design of interiors and lighting.
