Likely English, mid to late 19th century. A pair of black lacquered balloon-back spindle armchairs or parlor chairs with gold-leaf painted decoration and brightly hand embroidered wool seats, the curved crest rails decorated with gilt central floral motif flanked by painted acanthus leaf decoration, joined by four ring and baluster-turned spindles with gilt decoration surmounting a curved stay rail, the seats upholstered in complimentary but unmatched multicolored wool tambour with embroidered floral and foliate patterning in relief, the gold-leaf (gilt) painted seat rail decorated with brass nailhead trim, the curved scrolled arms painted with gold leaf stripe and foliate decoration continuing from the stiles, altogether resting on curved supports terminating in frontal cabriole legs with gilt acanthus leaf decoration and rear splayed legs. Approximate height 38.5", seat width 22.25", width (arm to arm) 24", depth 21", seat to floor 16.5".
