DOGON (AFRICAN) CARVED WOOD TROUGH, H 12", L 40":Piece was purchased from the Totem-Meneghelli Gallery in Johannesburg, South Africa, which stated "This is an important cult object used in testing the novices of the men's secret society. The carvings in relief refer to the Nommo who were the first ancestors. The crocodile refers to the sacrificing of one of the Nommo to save the world and, because the horse was the first animal to reach earth, the trough carries a horse's head.
