Indian, late 19th/ early 20th century. A carved wood and ivory figural shrine with base as a naturalistic carved wooden elephant standing square on four feet with long drooping trunk, ivory tusks, and painted bridle and saddle blanket with crosshatched patterning to center surrounded by meandering key and simulated fringe, the blanket decorated to each side with two hexagonal and butterfly shaped cloisonne medallions. Raised above the elephant is a carved wooden lotus blossom form topped by a carved ivory reliquary with hinged doors that open to reveal a seated buddha figure with legs crossed and hands clasped in a meditative pose, the cylindrical reliquary decorated in the round in relief with floral and figural patterning with a pointed finial at top, the entire form raised upon a carved rosewood pedestal of rectangular form on four feet. Without pedestal, approximately 16.5" x 10" x 5".
