Italian school, late 18th/ early 19th century. "Rebecca At The Well", oil on canvas, apparently unsigned. Painting is a classical Old Master style rendering of the Old Testament story of Rebecca, mother of Jacob and Esau, at a well in Biblical patriarch Abraham's homeland as the servant Eliezer fulfills an oath to his master to find Abraham's son Isaac a wife. Rebekah offers to pull water for both the servant and his camels from the well, thereby fulfilling the prayer for a sign made by Eliezer only moments before. Painting depicts the young and beautiful Rebecca wearing dress of gold, red, and green holding a handled copper pitcher in her right hand with a twisted rope trailing it as she stands before the edge of a well. Rolling hills with scattered architecture fill the background of the scene. Framed approximately 46" x 38 1/4", unframed approximately 40 3/8" x 29 3/4".
