French, early 19th century. "Le Guepier Cuvier Male. No. 9", hand-colored ornithological engraving from "Histoire Naturelle des Promérops et des Guépiers", published 1806-07 in Paris, written by François Levaillant (1753-1824) with engravings by Guyard and others after Auguste Pelletier (French, active c.1816-1846). Engraving depicts a brightly colored bird with body of greens and blues over a white chest with black striped white head and long beak, the bird resting on a tree branch. Inscribed lower center "Le Cuepier Cuvier Male, No. 9", lower left "Auguste pinx.", below title "De l'Imprimerie de Millevoy", and lower right "Guyard fils sculp". Framed approximately 28" x 20.25", sheet size approximately 20.75" x 14.125".
