American, 20th century. New York Empire style mahogany Secretaire a Abattant manufactured by Kindel for the National Trust Collection, the upright case with a gilt metal mounted frieze with opposing standing winged sphinx and lyre above fall front opening to a desk with a green gilt tooled leather writing surface and a series of vertically arranged small drawers and four pigeonholes centering a mirrored compartment flanked by ebonized colonnettes with gilt capitals and bases; the desk above a pair of paneled cabinet doors, the case flanked by a pair of gilt mounted and cylindrical pillars and raised on front carved foliate and animal paw feet, the back on turned feet. Stamped to the back National Trust #778422507. Height 56.15", width 37", depth 18". Note: 1985-In collaboration with the United States National Trust for Historic Preservation, Kindel embarks on a third licensing agreement. Royalties generated by the sale of Kindel reproductions went directly to support the Trust. Eighteen new furniture pieces were reproduced from various National Trust properties including Cliveden in Philadelphia, Chesterwood, the ancestral home of Daniel Chester French in Stockbridge, Massachusetts, and Kykuit, the Rockefeller estate in Tarrytown, New York.
