Matt Moulthrop (American (Georgia), b. 1977). A large turned red maple bowl of flattened bulbous form with narrow mouth and hollowed interior. Signed to underside "Matt Moulthrop, Red Maple, Acer Rubrum" and numbered "903-270". Approximate height 6.75", diameter 11". Provenance: Purchased 9.29.2007 from The Signature Shop & Gallery, 3267 Roswell Road, Atlanta, GA 30305. Note: As a third generation wood turner, Matt Moulthrop has spent his entire life surrounded by wood. He is continuing the legacy of the Moulthrop family by turning simple, elegant forms that capture and enhance the natural beauty of the material. Matt learned his woodturning skills the old fashioned way, by apprenticing with a master. He spent a total of nine years apprenticing first with his grandfather Edward Moulthrop, and then his father Philip Moulthrop. The Moulthrops are a dynasty of artists – grandfather, son, and grandson – who have made significant contributions to the field of wood turning and share a consistency of vision and process. Ed began turning as a teenager in the 1930s; Philip began turning in the 1970s; Matt, who has spent his life around wood, is just beginning his career. Philip and Matt both apprenticed with Ed in Atlanta, Georgia, where each now has his own studio.
