VENETIAN SCHOOL, MID 16TH C. OIL ON CANVAS, 29" X 21", PORTRAIT OF A MAN:Unsigned; period carved wood frame. Provenance: purchased from Charles Agnew & Sons, London, 1959 as a Tintoretto (label on verso, also copies of 4 letters on file from Agnew & Sons, 1959, 1963, 1964 and 1991 regarding the painting). As per the 1959 letter from Charles Agnew & Sons, the additional provenance is as follows: ex. Coll. Max Rothschild of London, England, sold to Agnew's in 1925; it was then in the collection of Mr. Addison Mizner of Palm Beach and since then in a private collection in England. Identified as 'School of Tintoretto' by Ian Kennedy, Director, Old Masters Collections, Christie's, New York, April 1992 (copy of letter on file). Photo identified as Venetian 16th c. school by Frederick Ilchman, Baker Curator of Paintings, Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, MA and not by Tintoretto but having points of comparison to portraits by Tintoretto and some similarities to the work of Venetian painter Paris Bordone (1500-1571).
