GERMAN PORCELAIN BEER STEIN, 1945-78, H 11":having a pewter hinged lid with a finial depicting a German sailor holding a German battle flag and a cast rampant lion holding a shield, as a thumb lift. Sides have a scene of a German war ship and in the foreground a German sailor on shore with a flag, a cannon, anchor and oars; inscribed on the rim: '1896 Otto Kihle 1899' at the base: 'S.M. Schiff, Hamburg" (His Majesty's Ship Hamburg); also inscribed on each side of the scene are the names of the crew in vertical columns; The lithopane of the interior on the bottom is of a nude woman with a drape around her; stamped on the underside is a crown over an 'R' and 'Germany' and 'Handmalerel' (hand painted); The keel was laid for the 'Hamburg' in 1902 and launched in 1903 and scrapped in 1956; actual size 11 1/2" H.
