English, early 19th century. A rare and charming Regency mahogany sugar chest comprising a hinged rectangular top lid with canted corners surmounting a conforming frieze, the corners carved with paterae, opening to the sugar storage interior, the exterior of the case decorated with flattened fluted corner columns flanking the facade with decorative oval comprising darkwood stringing inlay surmounted by a brass keyhole, over the lower drawer decorated with an oval comprising darkwood stringing with central gilt metal pull, the corner columns terminating in gilt ball feet, the sides each mounted with patinated metal lion's heads with ring handles. Approximate height 21.25", width 17", depth 12".
