SOL LEWITT (AMERICAN 1928-2007), OIL ON CANVAS, 1960, "FIGURES IN LANDSCAPE", 48" X 48":Signed lower right and dated 1960. Provenance: purchased in New York, 1961-1962 by the current owner directly from the artist. Sol Lewitt was a trail blazer in the start of Minimalism and Conceptualism after WWII. Different than his later geometric style, this painting shows Lewitt's influence from the early works of Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg and Frank Stella as well as the assembled serial motion images of the photography of Eadweard Muybridge (late 1880's). This painting is from a series of early 1960's paintings where Lewitt interprets with heavy impasto Muybridge's multiple image figures in motion and shows his influence also from those early works of Johns, Stella and Rauschenberg.
