Provenance: gift to current consignor from his father; certificate of authenticity from Old Hill Gallery Ltd., Iden, Rye, Sussex, England, Oct. 5, 1970. John MacWhirter, member of the Royal Academy, was born in Slateford, Scotland and died in London, England. A painter of landscapes, watercolorist and printmaker, he studied under Robert Scott Lauder and John Ballantyne. At age 14 he had his first exhibition at the Royal Scottish Academy. MacWhirter traveled to America in 1877, spending several years in California. From 1864 on he exhibited annually at the Royal Academy in London and was made an associate there in 1879.
