English, possibly 18th century. A brass-covered tinder or firewood chest comprising a hinged lid with hand-wrought hinges, the panel edges decorated with repoussé circular rondels, the central panel with applied central crest with three "x" forms and surmounted by a crown with central cross flanked by tasseled ribbons, the crest flanked by two applied rampant lions, over the case section decorated with conforming applied crest and lions at the front panel, each side with handles, each corner of the case decorated with conforming rondels terminating in four squared feet. Note: hinges have replaced modern screws. Approximate height 17", width 30", depth 18.25".
