Hiram Bloomer (American (California), 1845-1911). "Leading the Flock", oil on canvas laid down on wood board, signed lower left "H. R. Bloomer". Pastoral landscape painting depicting a shepherd leading a flock of sheep down a curving dirt path at center accompanied by a dog, at right the path flanked by a rocky embankment, and at left a vast meadown in greens and browns, the whole backed by a line of distant mountains and set below a sky with approaching storm clouds at left. Verso of board attached with letter of appraisal from W. F. Haney, Jr., Director of Witherspoon Galleries, Lafayette, California dating to 1974 and valuing the painting at $800. Framed approximately 15.75" x 23.625". Unframed approximately 12" x 20.25". Note: Hiram Reynolds Bloomer traveled from his home in San Francisco to Paris between 1874-1979 where he took up residence in James Whistler's old studio. While previously painting mainly portraits, Bloomer's post-France works were mainly landscapes exhibiting influence of the Barbizon School at work during this period in France.
