Engraved Presentation Powder Horn, America, c. 1843, large horn made for whaling ship Captain Joseph Mayhew with engraved images of whaling scenes, whales, mariner's compass, anchor, and inscription "Cpt JOSEPH MAYHEW" over "WHALER," above a spreadwing eagle and shield and dated "1843," the tip end with turned threaded nipple and faceted neck with inset mother-of-pearl disks, turned mahogany plug end centered with a carved bone heart and peg, inset with mother-of-pearl and abalone disks, (minor loss and crack on tip), lg. 24 in. Note: Accompanying the horn are three items associated with Captain Mayhew: a signed letter addressed to Captain Mayhew dated December 21, 1852, the envelope containing that letter with his address and postmarked "Philadelphia Pa. Dec. 21/5 cts.," and an ambrotype image purported to be Captain Mayhew, all three framed together.
