American School, 19th Century, Pair of Portraits, 1830-40. Unsigned. Oils on canvas of Joseph Dixon West and his wife. (a) the seated Mrs. West holds a book and wears a light gray mob cap and pink shawl trimmed with fringe over her dark dress. Condition: slight reduction in size; canvas is tacked to wood panel; retouch; revarnish. (b) Mr. West's is also a half-length pose; he wears a dark waistcoat with a black cravat and a white shirt with a high collar. Condition: reduced, restoration includes canvas tacked to wood panel, inpainting, revarnish. hts. 28, wds. 24 in. (sight) Provenance: The consignor received these paintings in the early 1970s from a relative in Port Deposit, Maryland, who told him that the depicted sitters had run a lucrative general store on the Maryland shore and had the painting of them done as barter for goods.
