Polychrome Painted Ceremonial Wooden Drum, Boston, 19th century, the drum with bentwood rims and body, paint decorated with an oval reserve centered with yellow lettering "CADETS 1786" and bordered in black letters with the motto "MONSTRAT VIAM" (It Points the Way), topped with a radiating star flanked by flags and accoutrements of battle, interior label with black stenciled lettering "FROM H. PRENTISS 33 COURT ST. BOSTON," replaced heads, and new rope included, (imperfections), ht. 17 1/2, dia. 16 1/2 in. Note: The First Corps of cadets has been one of the major organizations of the Massachusetts National Guard for over 250 years, acting as an officer-producing institution for new regiments from the Revolutionary war through World War II.
