Needlework Sampler, made by Sally Mayo, Warwick, Massachusetts, c. 1798, silk threads on a linen ground, with alphabet panels over stitched lettering "Sally Mayo born Warwick Oct. 26th 1784 aged 14 years.," and "With efforts warm improve the Mind/Knowledge acquire become refined/Still without practice Learning's vain/When joined with Wisdom it is gain.," above a scene with a house flanked by trees with animals and figures in the foreground, geometric motifs stitched in the upper corner blocks, and zig-zag and sawtooth borders, (toning, fading), 16 1/4 x 10 1/4 in., framed. Note: A genealogy search records that Sally Mayo was born October 26, 1784 in "Warwick, Massachusetts, in Franklin county, to Edward Mayo and Eunice Ball."
