Engraved Whale Tooth, America, 19th century, engraved with a depiction of George Washington in an oval reserve, over an American flag and a spreadwing eagle grasping an anchor of Hope and an olive branch in its talons, a banner inscribed "IN GOD WE HOPE" is held in its beak, a three masted vessel sails in the distance, the reverse depicts "Sperm Whale Fishery," as is inscribed above a spouting whale and below two scenes: one showing a harbor with a lighthouse and three vessels, the other a whaling mother ship beside three whale boats with a captured whale and pursuing a diving whale, the scenes faintly heightened with red and blue sealing wax, (imperfections), lg. 7 5/8 in.
