NJ." l.r., vessel identified on the bow. Oil on canvas, 22 x 36 in., in a gilt gesso frame. Condition: Scattered retouch. Note: Antonio Jacobsen was born in 1850 in Denmark and left for New York City in the 1870s. His sketching of the ships that sailed in and out of New York harbor was soon recognized for its excellence. He received commissions from sea captains and ship owners and eventually steamship companies to record their entire fleets. He was a prolific painter, who recorded some 6000 domestic and international ships as they passed through the age of sail to steam and is recognized for his unsurpassed contributions to America's maritime history.
