American School, 19th Century Miniature Portrait of Shipmaster John Porter Page. Unsigned, artist and sitter identified in an inscription on the reverse. Watercolor on paper, heightened with gum arabic, depicting a bust-length profile portrait of the gentleman with muttonchop sideburns and wearing a blue jacket, 2 1/2 in. dia. oval aperture, in a molded giltwood frame. Note: a label inscribed on the reverse reads: "Painted by Henry Walton. Original painting on paper of John Porter Page Shipmaster 1802-1837 son of John and Mary (Leland) Page." Possibly the label is referring to Henry Walton (1820-1873) who is believed to have been born in England, emigrated to Ithaca, New York, in 1836, and worked in a studio there till 1846. He is known for his landscapes, portraits, miniatures, and lithography.
