(Civil War, Mass. 54th Regiment), Civil War surgeon's kit, Weiss, London, maker, mid 19th-century, in brass-bound mahogany case with velvet-lined interior fitted with numerous implements including bone saws, scalpels, tourniquets, etc., case 14 5/8 x 7 1/4 x 2 5/8 in., (good, with minor age wear to case and interior, including a small age-typical shrinkage cracks below brass at one corner of lid). Provenance: Descended directly in the family of a member of the Massachusetts 54th regiment. The rounded-end bone saw likely associated (differently patterned handle not marked Weiss) brass tourniquet handle not marked. possibly lacking one scalpel, and with one scalpel with some damage to handle. Case with minor age wear to case and interior, including a small age-typical shrinkage cracks below brass at one corner of lid Note: Descended in the family of Dr. Clarence A. Cheever, (1858-1947), born in Wrentham, MA. By family repute, this set was given to Cheever upon his graduation from Harvard Medical School by a member of the MA 54th.
