Japanese Haniwa low fired clay pottery head (possibly Kofun period, circa 250-600 A. D.), of human form with pierced almond shaped eyes, pointed nose, and almond form mouth, oval form ears with pierced hole at center, remnants of brimmed hat form at crown of head. Figural sculptural fragment likely originally a tomb figure from the burial mound grounds at Kofun. Head fragment raised on a contemporary black rectangular plinth base with adjustable wooden support at center, marked on back with hand written note reading 'Head of man, Haniwa, From Haragi prefecture, Tumuli Period, 500 A.D." beside vertical line of calligraphic text. Overall (on later stand) approximate height 11.7" x 4.25 square. Height of head approximately 6.7".
