A miniature 19th century devotional painting on laid down ivory of an elderly John the Baptist traditionally depicted with long gray beard, a shepherd's hook in crossed hands, and wearing a hair shirt. A halo rests over the subject's head and the words "Charitas Dei" are inscribed on an oval cartouche beside it. A photograph contemporary to the painting is applied on verso and depicts a young woman in profile. Painting is encased in a brass oval frame decorated with beading and etched scroll band, and has a hinged arm with two feet that acts as bolster for the frame. Inscription on verso of frame "M.H. Jamar, from I.R.S., September 24, 1896". Approximately 2.5" tall.
