Dragon Robe, Chifu , China, Qing Dynasty (1644-1912), with eight gold-couched dragons pursuing flaming pearls amidst clouds, bats, and floral sprigs against a light brown ground, a ninth dragon on the underflap, all above a lishui border with auspicious emblems emerging out of the rolling waves, with pale yellow silk lining; the collar, cuffs, and trimming with similar decorations on a dark ground, 56 x 81 in. Provenance: From the estate of Richard Young, Van Hornesville, New York. This collection originally belonged to his stepmother, Louise Powis Brown Young, who had amassed the textiles during the first quarter of the 20th century.
