Two Transitional Wucai Enameled Jars with Covers, China, 17th century, baluster shape with straight neck, one depicting children at play watched by court ladies in a garden setting; the other (with repairs) depicting a couple surrounded by court officials and guests with gifts to offer in a room setting, the shoulder decorated with a band of cracked ice in underglaze blue, one domed lid with flat rim decorated with carved and openwork ruyi and floral scrolls, ht. 16 1/2 in. Provenance: From a private Massachusetts collection. The jar with wood cover was on display in the exhibition The Bostonians: Painters of An Elegant Age, 1870-1930, at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston in 1986, the Denver Art Museum, and the Terra Museum of American Art, Chicago, in 1987.
