Hirado Blue and White Porcelain Covered Box, Japan, 18th/19th century, with an applied chrysanthemum with two buds and leaves on a domed cover, bluish-white glaze with two chrysanthemums and two butterflies in underglaze blue invoking a poetic feeling of the Edo period, both the rims of the cover and box unglazed, flat base, dia. 2 1/2 in. Note: For a similar example displaying the same dexterity in molding a flower see Hirado: Prince of Porcelains , by Louis Lawrence (Chicago: Art Media Resources, Inc., 1997), p. 61, pl. 31.
