Ivory Okimono of a Fisherman with Two Boys, Japan, 19th century, standing on a rocky ground near rolling water, the man throwing a net into the sea, following a boy pointing with his index finger, the other boy looking out to sea for the right moment holding his own small net over his shoulder, elaborately carved, incised, and crafted to minute detail including the eyes of the fish in basket inlaid in metal, partially coated in transparent enamel, signed Kankou inlaid on base, 8 1/4 x 10 1/4 in. Provenance: 1904, sold by Yamanaka & Co., Atlantic City, New Jersey, to Chester Will Chappell (1845-1909) of Oneida, New York; property by descent of the great-grandniece of Mrs. Chappell; copy of original receipt available.
