Two Persian Pen Boxes, Qalamdan , Iran, 19th century, polychrome on lacquered papier-mache, with rounded ends and sliding trays, the top of one painted with a central cartouche of a figure holding a teacup, with two pairs of cartouches each depicting a bird and a deer, the sides with vignettes of landscapes and hares, the black base with gilt decorations, lg. 8 1/4, the other painted with a vertical composition of a woman in a field, the sides feature a continuous, repeated depiction of two figures in a landscape, the black base with gilt decoration, fitted with a silvered inkwell, lg. 8 1/2 in.
