Frank Henry Shapleigh (American, 1842-1906) Old Fort at Matanzas, Florida Signed and dated "F. H. Shapleigh 1891." l.r., titled and signed on the reverse. Oil on academy board, 7 1/2 x 12 5/8 in. (19.0 x 32.0 cm), framed. Condition: Subtle surface grime, minor abrasions near lower edge (including signature), tiny loss to support l.l., fine craquelure. N.B. Fort Matanzas was begun in 1740, and was designed to protect the city of St. Augustine, which lay upriver from the fort by about 15 miles.
