Attributed to Jan van der Meer the Younger (Dutch, 1656-1705) Pair of Panoramic River Landscapes Unsigned, both inscribed "J. vd Meer/de oude" on the reverse. Both ink wash over traces of black chalk, 4 x 6 3/8 in. (10.1 x 16.2 cm), in a common frame. Condition: Scattered pinpoint foxing, sheets hinged to backing mat in two places at top edges verso. Provenance: Sotheby's Olympia, Old Master Drawings (Sale W01407), December 13, 2001, Lot 316. N.B. The Sotheby's catalogue from Sale W01407 describes the attribution for these drawings as follows, "The old attribution on the verso is to Jan van der Meer the Elder (1628-1691), father of Jan the Younger, but these compositions bear little resemblance to that artist's landscape paintings, and few landscape drawings by him are known. Although the younger van der Meer usually signed his drawings, it nonetheless seems more likely that he, rather than his father, made these two" (p. 125).
