Created in 1892 for The Oregon Trail by J. Francis Parkman, Jr., (1) the illustration appears in the volume as a 3/4 page reproduction without the inscription "a mountain man" and with the name "Kurtz" written in block capital letters in the blank area just below the grass under the most forward horse hoof.
