Eros Magazine, Complete Set, 1962, Volume One, Numbers One through Four. Hardcover copies, illustrated throughout, with some related ephemera; edited by Ralph Ginzburg (1929-2006), Eros ceased publication after the fourth issue, when the editor was indicted under federal obscenity laws. Notably, issue number three features Bert Stern's photo shoot of Marilyn Monroe, taken just six weeks before her death. Some have suggested that the obscenity charge visited on Ginzburg was based not on an objection to the magazine's erotic subject matter, but on a racist objection to the photographic tone poem, "Black and White in Color," which features a romantically engaged male and female couple of contrasting skin tones.
