Albumen Photographic Print of Alvan Clark (1804-1887) and His Two Sons, taken by T. R. Burnham, Boston, c. 1870s, mammoth size print, in a molded walnut frame with gilt liner. Note: Alvan Clark was born in Ashfield, Massachusetts. He started out earning a living as an engraver and later by painting portrait miniatures until about 1860. He also developed an interest in making reflective telescopes and lenses. In about 1850, with his two sons George Bassett Clark, and Alvan Graham Clark, they founded the firm Alvan Clark & Sons, in Cambridgeport, Massachusetts. They were the foremost manufacturers of large refracting telescopes in the world in the late 19th century.
