Audubon, John James (1785-1851) Ruffed Grouse , [from] Birds of America . London: Havell, 1838. Hand-colored engraving, printed on Whatman paper with the Turkey Mill watermark, trimmed at the top edge, with loss to the uppermost parts of the highest pieces of vegetation: the stem with the dangling grapes and the grape leaf and stem just above the highest grouse's head; plate numbers also trimmed away, some faint streaks in the blank space between the leftmost grouse and the trillium, 24 1/2 x 37 3/4 in.
