Adams, John Quincy (1767-1848) Autograph Document Signed, April, 1794. Single page on laid paper with partial eagle watermark, inscribed on one side, with court information on the verso. A written indictment by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts against Peter Hilliston for the theft of one pair of cotton stockings, worth six shillings, from Samuel Cobb, in Adams's hand, with his signature, "J.Q. Adams, pro Rep, pro Tem." Folded in thirds, some toning to the inscribed third on the obverse, small damp stain, 8 1/4 x 6 1/2 in. On June 3, 1794, President Washington tapped Adams to serve as American ambassador to the Netherlands. This court document, made just before Washington's appointment, catches a twenty-seven-year-old Adams amid his newly successful law career.
