Attributed to Constant Troyon (French, 1810-1865) Le Canal , alternatively titled La Petite Ecluse Bears signature and date "TROYON. 1860." l.l., with a wax seal from Collection Sedelmeyer, Paris, on the stretcher, inscribed "N. 103" on the stretcher, identified in a label from Arthur Tooth and Sons Ltd., London, on the back of the frame. Oil on canvas, 18 1/4 x 22 in. (46.4 x 56.0 cm), framed. Condition: Lined, scattered retouch, craquelure. Provenance: Sedelmeyer, Paris; Weeks, Brookline, Massachusetts; Walter P. Two areas of retouch in the center of the sky, located approximately 5 inches down from the top and 7 1/2 inches across from the left side. Larger area of retouch is L-shaped and measures 1 3/4 in, x 1 1/2 in. The smaller area of retouch measures 3/8 in. in diameter. Stable craquelure in sky. Small area of possible overcleaning in the tree in the center of the composition.
