American School, 19th Century View of a Stately Home Possibly signed l. r. Oil on canvas, 21 1/2 x 36 in. (54.6 x 91.4 cm), framed. Condition: Scattered paint losses, accretions, abrasions, craquelure, extensive surface grime. N.B. This work most likely dates from the mid-19th century, showing a rambling, asymmetrical villa of the style that came into fashion with the pattern books of Andrew Jackson Downing (American, 1815-1852), inspired by the English designer John Claudius Loudon in the 1830s. Canvas stencil from Edward Dechaux, New York, on the reverse.
