Attributed to Affortunato Gory (Italian/French, fl. 1895-1925) Cupid, carved white marble, the nude child preparing to draw his bow, with foliage to base, incised "A. DE. G[C]ORI/GALL. LAPINI/ FIRENZE 1895," ht. 36 in. N. B. Gory altered his name from Fortunato Gori when he moved from Florence to Paris at the turn of the last century. Cesare Lapini (Italian, 1848-c. 1893) was as successful sculptor of contemporary and antique subjects working in the second half of the 19th century. From his death until 1900, his workshop became the Galleria Lapini. Old repairs to crossbow and arrowhead with arrowhead off but present. Crossbow sections possibly replaced. Small chip to arrowhead. Small nicks to flowers around base, wings, and hair. Surface discoloration.
