Circle of Thomas Cowperthwaite Eakins (American, 1844-1916) Portrait Study of a Young Man with Hat, Probably Samuel Murray Signed "... Crowell" in charcoal l.r., inscribed "Frances Crowell" in ballpoint pen by the hand of Gordon Hendricks l.r. Charcoal on paper, sight size 20 1/4 x 16 1/4 in. (51.4 x 41.3 cm), framed. Condition: Foxing, not examined out of frame. Provenance: Through the estate of Gordon Hendricks (1917-1980), art historian, New York City; private collection, New York City. N.B. The study closely resembles a portrait of Eakins' student and friend, sculptor Samuel Murray, which was painted by Eakins in 1889, and is in the collection of the Mitchell Museum at Cedarhurst, Mount Vernon, Illinois. The signature lower right appears to be either "F." or "E." Crowell, which may be that of Eakins's sister, Frances Eakins Crowell (1848-1940), or his niece Eleanor "Ella" Crowell (1873-1897), who studied with her uncle in the early 1890s.
