Howard Russell Butler (American, 1856-1934) Figure Along the Maine Coastline Signed "H. R. Butler" l.l., inscribed "...Shown in gallery" in pencil on the reverse and "One of Uncle Howard's many/Maine coast paintings-/perhaps painted in the/late 20s. Aunt Virginia/gave it to me for a/wedding present, 1941/I love it/M.H." in pencil on the paper backing. Oil on canvasboard, 16 x 20 in. (40.6 x 50.8 cm), framed (under glass). Condition: Retouch to l.r. quadrant, minor gilt along edges beneath frame liner. Provenance: By descent from the artist through the artist's family, to the current owner.
