American School, 19th Century Portrait of the USS Frigate Constellation. Unsigned, a note affixed to the reverse is inscribed "The U.S.S. frigate Consellation [ sic ] coming about to pick up the anchor buoy. Oil on panel, 23 3/4 x 37 in., in a period molded wood frame. Condition: Panel cracked and repaired at center, crack l.r., repaint. Note: Constructed in 1797, the USS Constellation was a 38-gun frigate, one of the six original frigates authorized for construction by the Naval Act of 1794. She was the first U.S. Navy vessel put to sea and the first to engage and defeat an enemy vessel. She was decommissioned in 1853.
