Carved Wooden Model of the Clipper Ship Young America, made by Harry Connell, America, 20th century, the three-masted vessel with rigging, metal and wood details, mounted on a wooden base, ht. 14 1/2, lg. 20 in. Note: The model is accompanied by a plaque reading: "The 'Young America,' first of the extreme clipper ships, was built by William Webb of New York at a cost of $140,000. Launched April 30, 1835, she measured: length 243 feet, breadth 43 feet 2 inches, depth 26 feet 9 inches and grossed 1966 tons ... survived fifty years of hard sailing and held to the record of 99 days from Liverpool to San Francisco before foundering in the North Atlantic in 1866."
