Attributed to Thomas Ware (Vermont and Whitehall, New York, 1803-1827) Portrait of a Gentleman. Unsigned. Oil on panel, c. 1820, the dark-haired young man wears a dark jacket with brass buttons offset by his white collar and carries a partly open book in his right hand, inscribed on the verso "From the Comstock family, Chelsea, Vermont," 28 1/2 x 20 3/4 in. (sight), in original wooden frame. Condition: Warp to the panel, minor touch-up, frame repainted. Note: Thomas Ware (1803-1829) of Pomfret, Vermont, was a portrait artist. Of his approximately fifty known paintings, most were accomplished in Vermont. A few were done in Whitehall, New York, about 45 miles west, where he died at age 24.
