Attributed to Thomas Ware (American, 1803-1827) Portrait of Mary (Polly) Ware Thompson (1795-? ). Unsigned, attributed to Thomas Ware, brother of the subject, Pomfret, Vermont, c. 1814. Oil on canvas, the girl wearing a lace cap and collar against her dark hair and dress, 19 1/2 x 13 1/2 in., in a giltwood molded frame. Condition: Unlined, cleaned, minor retouch. Note: Thomas Ware of Pomfret , Vermont was a portrait artist. Of his approximately fifty known paintings, most were accomplished in Vermont, though a few were done in Whitehall, New York, about 45 miles west, where he died at age 24. Provenance: Family descent to the consignor.
