American School, 19th Century, Memorial to Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry. Unsigned. Charcoal and chalk on sandpaper-treated artist board, depicting a sarcophagus inscribed "Sacred to the Memory/of Commodore Oliver Hasard (sic) Perry/of the United States Navy/Who departed this Life Aug. 23 1819/Aged 34 Years," the monument flanked by two women and four children, with a spreadwing eagle over military trappings laid out before the monument, a mausoleum, sailing vessel, trees and foliage in the background, 18 x 24 in., framed. Oliver Hazard Perry was most noted for his role commanding the American squadron in the victory over the British at the Battle of Lake Erie. The well-known quote "We have met the enemy and they are ours..." was penned by Perry in his report to General William Henry Harrison after this victory.
